At /r/jokes, the mod team prefers to stay behind the scenes, showing up occasionally to make a joke or two but, while we are always clearing out the queue, we typically allow the community to mod itself, with a few exceptions. When we do interact, we like to joke around. For now, we are going to be serious.
Today, however, I feel that as a default subreddit, we have no other choice than to get involved in the current happenings currently affecting several default subreddits, including /r/iama and /r/askreddit.
For those who don't know what is going on, I suggest reading the breakdown at http://ift.tt/1HzVL53.
Long story short, admin communication with mods, default or non-default has always been scarce, and after /u/cupcake1713 left the admin team, it's become virtually non-existant. Additionally, the tools moderators have access to have been virtually unchanged since the inception of this subreddit. Despite multiple promises from the admins, very little is done to improve our tools.
After discussing it with the other mods, we will not be going private, or restriction submissions.
We do, however, support the other defaults going dark, and stand by their decision. We think that with the current climate at reddit, it's about time the moderators pushed back.
Reddit moderators volunteer their time and energy maintaining this site. We are volunteers. All we ask is for communication from the administration, something that has been lacking for far too long.
