The Whitney Houston Biopic Is Surprisingly Sympathetic To Ex Bobby Brown
Lifetime’s Whitney could upset Houston’s diehard fans with its unsparing portrait of their relationship.

For a long time, among Whitney Houston's fans and sympathizers, the accepted narrative of her relationship with R&B singer Bobby Brown was that Brown was the miscreant who led a formerly angelic singer down a dark, drug-fueled path.
Eventually, a different version of their relationship that's more sympathetic to Brown emerged — which is the interpretation in actor and first-time director Angela Bassett's Lifetime movie Whitney, which premieres Jan. 17. Viewers will see Houston abusing drugs before Brown even comes into the picture; in this retelling of their relationship, Houston is the one who leads Brown into harder drugs.
But for Bassett, this portrayal of their relationship simply serves to more accurately set up the beginning of the central, complicated narrative of Houston's life — and the one she and producers chose to focus on in this biopic, which stars former reality TV show model YaYa DaCosta as Houston.
"When I came aboard, the story was a five-year period through the wonder years of their careers, where they both were very successful, and popular, magnetic, charismatic, entertaining. It's all beautiful — that first blush of love," Bassett said in an interview with BuzzFeed News, speaking of the beginning of Houston and Brown's courtship in the late '80s.
That's perhaps an optimistic view of a tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship that was fueled by drug abuse, 911 calls, uncomfortable TV interviews, and tabloid covers. By the '90s, Houston and Brown were the frequent butt of jokes on Saturday Night Live and MadTV, and the 2005 Bravo reality series Being Bobby Brown showed a couple whose relationship was on its last legs.
But Bassett said she wasn't particularly interested in what came later. "You get an indication of what is to come," she said of her film. "We all know how the story ends. We didn't need to visit that here."

Japan's Biggest Sensation Dresses Like Sgt. Pepper On Friday The 13th
Meet the all-girl Kamen Joshi, aka “Mask Girls,” who just topped the charts in Japan.
Earlier this year Japanese idol group Kamen Joshi, or Mask Girls, released a track, "元気種☆" or "Genkidane☆," which is now No. 1 on Japan's Oricon Singles Chart.
Oricon keeps track of singles and albums sold in Japan. But, unlike our own Billboard (where Mask Girls are also currently making noise), Oricon chart rankings are based on physical singles sales only, and does not include download sales or YouTube streams. "Genkidane☆" sold 132,000 physical copies in its first week, propelling them to No. 1 with no major label backing, according to babymetal.net, a fan site for premiere Japanese idol group Babymetal that also keeps its finger on the pulse of all things J-Pop.

Mask Girls are made up of three Japanese idol groups -- Alice Juban, Steamgirls, and Armorgirls. "Genkidane☆" is a Babymetal-inspired romp that switches on a dime from cheery positivity to hardcore, boot-stomping metal.
It's the happiest nightmare you've ever subjected yourself to.

The lyrics in "Genkidane☆" are designed to inspire -- pump you up, get you excited about life. Kamen Joshi are basically singing random positive phrases. The song's title means "happy/energetic."
"It's kind of a pun because that last character -- 種 -- also means 'seed' (of a plant)," says BuzzFeed illustrator and Japanese speaker Faye Kahn. "Normally it's spelled differently."

Kahn helped translate some of the song's lyrics, which alternate between Japanese and English, to help us nail down its basic theme.
English words are in bold:
Everybody strongest! Going Now!! (x2)
Always be happy! Let a smile bloom clearly across your face!
Color changing flowers are blooming everywhere without stopping! Youthful energy!
Going!

America Needs To Find This Missing Wallaby Before It Gets Eaten By A Bear
Everybody stop what you’re doing, fly to Washington, and join the search.

"Bella took off across Highway 530 and down the embankment towards the river," the petting zoo wrote on Facebook. "We have not located her since."
The petting zoo is concerned for Bella's safety, given the bears and coyotes that roam the woods.
"There are several predators in the area and as night falls, temperatures drop, which requires a heating lamp for our sweet Bella," the zoo wrote.
"She isn't afraid of people, but could very well just be startled because she has been out for a few days."
Reuters reported that a pet psychic has offered to join the search, telling the zoo's owners she could feel the wallaby's heartbeat.
